Emergency Locksmith FAQs
Try another key if one is safely available and check whether the door is pressing against the frame. Do not repeatedly force the handle or key. A locksmith can then assess whether the problem lies with the key, cylinder, latch, multipoint mechanism or door alignment.
Non-destructive entry is considered where the lock and circumstances allow, but it cannot be promised in every case. The lock type, existing damage, failed components and how the door is secured all affect the method. If a part must be replaced, the reasons should be clear before work proceeds.
A responsible locksmith may ask for evidence that you live at or are authorised to access the address. If identification is locked inside, other reasonable checks may be needed. This protects property owners and occupants and is an important part of handling an emergency call-out properly.
Consider where and how the keys disappeared, whether the address can be identified from anything attached to them, and who may have access. In some situations changing or rekeying the relevant lock is prudent; in others, replacing a missing key may be sufficient after the risk is assessed.
Preserve the area and contact the police if a crime may have occurred. Avoid disturbing possible evidence until advised. Once the property can be worked on, damaged locks, keeps, frames and door alignment should all be examined, because replacing only the visible lock may leave another weakness unresolved.
Temperature changes, door movement, worn hinges or alignment problems can prevent the locking points from meeting their keeps. A failing gearbox or multipoint mechanism can cause similar symptoms. Forcing the handle may make matters worse, so both the hardware and the door’s position should be checked.
